In They Came Before Columbus, we see clearly the unmistakable face and handprint of black Africans in pre-Columbian America, and their overwhelming impact on the civilizations they encountered. Combining impressive scholarship with a novelist's gift for storytelling, Van Sertima re-creates some of the most powerful scenes of human history: the launching of the great ships of Mali in 1310 (two hundred master boats and two hundred supply boats), the sea expedition of the Mandingo king in 1311, and many others. Examining navigation and shipbuilding cultural analogies between Native Americans and Africans the transportation of plants, animals, and textiles between the continents and the diaries, journals, and oral accounts of the explorers themselves, Ivan Van Sertima builds a pyramid of evidence to support his claim of an African presence in the New World centuries before Columbus. They Came Before Columbus reveals a compelling, dramatic, and superbly detailed documentation of the presence and legacy of Africans in ancient America. brilliantly has that there is far more to black history than the slave trade."-John A. His personal experience of harsh working conditions and a deep sympathy for the poor inform much of his writing, and more than one scholar has made a life’s work out of tracing the parallels between the author’s life and his fiction. “ Dickens, who is generally considered one of the most accomplished writers in the English language, published twenty novels in his lifetime…and none of them has ever gone out of print. The Man Who Invented Christmas is a rich and satisfying read for Scrooges and sentimentalists alike. With warmth, wit, and an infusion of Christmas cheer, Les Standiford whisks us back to Victorian England, its most beloved storyteller, and the birth of the Christmas we know best. It was a harsh and dreary age, in desperate need of spiritual renewal, ready to embrace a book that ended with blessings for one and all. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. As uplifting as the tale of Scrooge itself, this is the story of how one writer and one book revived the signal holiday of the Western world. This allowed them four weeks to review things they had previously read in preparation for the final exam. Why talk about Vienna when boroughs closer to home are terra incognita? New York is the current music capital of the world so it is a good place to get people started in their understanding of the fascination world of music. I did so because I realized that most of my students at the City College of New York knew very little about the history of the city in which they resided. This is specifically designed for students in the City of New York. This is the textbook I designed for use in a college freshman music appreciation class. In his words, Chris Van Allsburg explains an adventure the ants go on: through the woods and up a mountain to find a sparkling treasure. Two Bad Ants is so much fun because the illustrations are essential to truly understanding the story. Two Bad Ants is a great example of how a picture book (with illustrations that tell half of the story) can help older students learn to write with creative word choice. Not only did this book help me when I first read it, but it also has great writing to learn from. Just because we can read chapter books does not mean we need to cut out the picture books! I think it’s a good reminder how picture books can touch the lives of big kids. She helped calm down with a picture book, a new book that had just come in to the library. Somehow, my teacher knew how to reach me on my first truly horrible big kid bad day. I’ve always had a special space in my heart for Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg because of the memories associated with it. Tom Dreyfus is the titular prefect, a member of a special investigations police force called Panoply that is responsible for protecting the Glitter Band. Events take place prior to the advent of the Melding Plague that had already ruined the Glitter Band and caused a massive decline in Yellowstone civilization at the time of the other Revelation Space novels. The Prefect is set in the 25th century in the Glitter Band, the realm of thousands of orbital habitats surrounding the planet Yellowstone in the Epsilon Eridani system, and the height of human civilization at the time. While the novel takes place in the Revelation Space universe, it has little connection to the other novels. A sequel, Elysium Fire, was released in January 2018. It is the fifth novel set in the Revelation Space universe, and takes place prior to the four previously released Revelation Space novels, but after some of the short stories. Aurora Rising (originally titled The Prefect) is a 2007 science fiction novel by Welsh author Alastair Reynolds. Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary, the work is an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during the ongoing period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. The book went through four editions in Foxe's lifetime and as well as a number of later editions and abridgements, including some that specifically reduced the text to a Book of Martyrs. The book was highly influential in those countries and helped shape lasting popular notions of Catholicism there. It includes a Protestant account of the sufferings of Protestants under the Catholic Church, with particular emphasis on England and Scotland. The Actes and Monuments, popularly known as Fox's Book of Martyrs, is a work of Protestant history and martyrology by John Foxe, first published in English in 1563 by John Day. I think this was one of my least favorites because I thought Kaitlyn went a little too far with her war on Nola. I loved the cover of this book when I was younger and always wanted an outfit like Nola (on the right). When the richest family in town needs a babysitter, Kaitlyn will do anything to defend her title. In The Babysitting Wars, Kaitlyn is the best babysitter in her town until a new girl moves to the area. Things get complicated fast because Annabel doesn’t like Sam as more than a friend, but her best friend does. I don’t know if it was the hair on the cover that reminded me of my mother’s graduation photo from the 80s or that I read this when I started growing out of these books, but this was my least favorite of my Candy Apple Books. In Totally Crushed, Annabel receives a red carnation from her best friend Sam on Valentine’s Day. They are written by a wide variety of authors but all of fun and fluffy reads… and some even have glitter on the covers! I remember LOVING these books when I was younger, and even though I don’t have nearly all of them (you can see a complete list of the books here), I thought I would count down the books I have read. Candy Apple Books are fun, middle grade books published by Scholastic. Definite domestic bliss fantasy wish fulfillment in this one. Fun story, though!
